When I first began my yoga practice at 16 years old it was a huge moment in my life. I had a massive injury from dance training & over working out at the gym. Being 16 going on 17 was very difficult for me for my older sister of five years passed away at 17. I experienced loss of my faith as a Baptist Christian. Yoga became my therapy for me mentally, physically, & spiritually. Now I love Oklahoma but there are certain things growing up that would raise an eyebrow. Not being Christian … that raised a lot of brows. After reading about Hinduism while studying the foundations of yoga I found Buddhism. The current Dalai Lama became my spiritual & philosophical teacher. This caused a lot of heartache to some close friends. My parents friends were in shock & then would remark “it’s just a phase”. My dad, who was raised Christian but leans toward agonistic, feared I would become isolated by my beliefs & would have a more challenging life. My mama who was raised as a Methodist Christian supported me with my beliefs as always & understood my reasons. It was different & maybe concerning to other family members. I didn’t understand the big deal. My spirituality was defined in the 14th Dalai Lamas words “This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” So with everyone looking at me like I was an odd duck or this as if yoga & being Buddhist was a form of rebellion I took my yoga practice based with my spiritual practice very damn seriously. I may have gone out of my way to show “I’m a yogi” & verged on being a yoga snob 🙈. Through the years I have studied the teachings (sooo many books lol), taken classes on the many different styles of yoga, & have over 500 hours of teacher training. With time I’ve become confident in who I am & not giving a fuck about what others think of me. And like my art I’m glad I received the foundation for my yoga practice for correct alignment & understanding the history for now I have the confidence to let loose & just go with the flow 😉🙏💚🌻 #AlOboutyou
