Hiking Yosemite National Park 😄⛰ 💚 #hikingadventures. Bit of a random question but I’m interested in everyone’s opinion on genetic engineering; the deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. I recently watched the new four episode @netflix documentary series called ‘Unnatural Selection’ really got me thinking on this. The series goes into CRISPR technology which is a simple yet powerful tool for editing genomes. It allows researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function. So we are looking at altering DNA whether it be to cure genetic diseases, enhancing our bodies & minds such as picking genes that are seen as more attractive or having higher intelligence, along with environmental studies such as changing the DNA in mosquitos to help with the malaria crisis in other countries. And then who should be able to work with CRISPR technology; scientists, corporations, or biohackers working from their homes & doing experiments on their own bodies – leading to another question on if you think biohacking in itself should be legal. For me I have so many mixed views. Its like a whirlwind of yes, no, wait, maybe, explain that again. It’s fucking fascinating & rather mind blowing how far we have come with science. The question is what is moral & ethical. What are the advancements & what are the causes of concern. How do we find the balance. So much to think on. I highly recommend you watch the series & come back to me with your thoughts. #unnaturalselection #foodforthought 📸 @forsoother2718
